Why the crocodile you may ask? Well, it all started in the 1920s when Rene Lacoste, a superstar tennis player of the time, made a wager with his French team Davis Cup captain. The Captain encouraged a win from Rene by promising an alligator suitcase if he was victorious! Lacoste did not win but according to an American journalist 'he fought like an alligator'. The alligator was saved and the crocodile was born, becoming the Rene Lacoste emblem.
Rene Lacoste was world number one in 1926-7 and won seven Grand Slam tennis titles and two Davis Cups in combination with his French team mates.
In 1933 Lacoste decide to manufacture the perfect tennis shirt to help beat the hot American summers. He was as successful in business as he was in sport. His original polo shirt called the 12.12, revolutionized sportswear. This was the first time a logo was used on the outside of a shirt!
